Description
Kanhatid Island, Surigao, The Philippines

This lovely little gem for sale is the answer to very island fantasy, a tropical island, yet with all the mod cons of cell phone signal, electricity, running water and a 2 bedroom tropical bungalow and servant’s quarters all for just $250,000.

The island itself is small, but it is fully developed, just buy it and move right in. The island doesn’t have such a great beach, but there are fantastic beaches just 5 mins by boat. The Island is in an exceptionally beautiful area, with dozens of coves, private beaches, swimming and diving locations, making this property ideal as a private retreat and also suitable for development as a small-scale resort. The surrounding area is magnificent, like a miniature El Nido with weird limestone formations, hidden lagoons, caves, caverns and dozens of little islands. You would never get bored with all the exploring. It also has fantastic diving. The sunsets are magnificent and there is a very pretty little island covered in palm trees in the bay right in front of the island giving a very picturesque and tropical view.

Seller: private owner, who has lived on the island for five years. Selling because he is returning to the USA for the education of his children.

Land area: about 1.5 hectares.

Frequently asked questions about life on a small island
By Richard Little of Kanhatid Island.

I guess the idea of buying island, in a tropical setting as close to Paradise as one is likely to get on this planet, appeals to most everyone. The advantages seem indisputable: the beauty of the sea enclosing neighboring islands, the warm mild climate with plenty of rain splashing through the sunshine, the sea shore and its myriad treasures, the peaceful quiet that envelops you when you leave telephones, cars, neighbors, billboards, and the crush of urban life behind. And all their costs easily manageable by retired schoolteachers like me.

The appeal of this fantasy usually lasts until one starts thinking about actually living in such a place. Then the tough questions start. In several years of leading on a island of San Dian, I have been asked these questions many times and offer here a few reflections, if not answers.

Don't you get bored?

Yes, sometimes. It was I ever bought in San Diego? Sure, sometimes. Once you retire from active work you inevitably faced the often difficult adjustment to inactivity, to not having a place to go every daily, is a feeling 16 hours a day with whatever you can find to do.

In my retirement years in San Diego have found that the city itself provided some of the answers, and was from the mostly wrong answers. The availability of endless shopping opportunities, entertainments, places to go, things to do, can press down a person like a heavy weight. Plus taking care of the bills, maintaining a house, keeping up with the yard, dealing with salesman, customer service reps, unresponsive claims officers and the endless traffic.

When you leave all that you have to find different answer is for those 16 hours a day, and the environment of a remote island doesn't provide nearly as many answers as a crowded city. So you have to fall back on your own resources. For me that has been a satisfying challenge.

Do you miss America?

Of course. Wherever I leave I will always be an American, and will always admire and feel part of the character of America and its core values but I don't has to live in the States to feel that way. Even so, there are aspects of my previous life that I do miss. Above all, the company of family and friends, though the Internet keeps me in touch, and a few of them have visited us in the Philippines, always a joy. And I get to California about once the year to make sure they don't forget me. Beyond that, I miss lots of little things, like foods, fresh bagels, lemon-meringue pie, prime rib and Thanksgiving turkey. And places we used to spend time in like Borders, Home Depot, Seaport Village and Idyllwild, and the Christmas season.

What you like most about living on the island?

Most of what they can say to that question will come as no surprise. The setting is indescribably beautiful. And I wonder sometimes it that phrase that ever be applied to anyplace else I have ever lived. I don't think it ever occurred to me to admire the beauty of San Diego, or of Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Munich, Moscow or other places I have lived for shorter or longer periods. These are great cities, but “beauty” is not a word I would used to describe any of them. In fact, I don't think I've ever lived amidst great beauty, or realised how deeply can press itself on me. When a sit on the deck of our house, facing the blue green sea and the islands beyond, amidst the coconut times palms and rocky crags dotting the sandy expanse of our front yard, I wonder how I will manage without it when we return to San Diego.

The pace of life is another small miracle. This is a procrastinator’s Paradise. Nothing has to be done today for there will be plenty of time tomorrow. A good book is all the excuse you need to set everything else aside for later. And yet, there is work to be done. These breakdown have to be fixed, the sea turns rough so the boat has to be wished up the ramp to safe harbour, there would deck has to be varnished periodically to protect against the salt air, the batteries have to be topped off regularly with distilled water, and approaching typhoon requires securing everything that might be swept away. But this is all part of the bond of mutual trust that links our family with our surroundings. We take care of our island, it takes care of us.
